Toronto man charged with impersonating a police officer in Markham fraud case

A 57-year-old Toronto man faces fraud-related charges after allegedly posing as a police officer and threatening to arrest a woman if she did not pay him.
York Regional Police said that in October 2022, a Markham woman received a call from an unknown man claiming to be an officer with Shanghai Municipal Police. He allegedly threatened her with arrest if she did not pay.
A month later, the suspect allegedly appeared at the woman’s residence and showed her fake I.D., claiming it was issued by Shanghai Municipal Police and Interpol. Police said the victim was again threatened she would be arrested if she did not pay.
According to police, the victim was then driven to two banks where money was transferred to the alleged suspect’s account.
On Oct. 3, York police charged a 57-year-old man, from Toronto, with numerous offences including fraud exceeding $5,000, extortion and impersonating a peace officer.
